Today, in search of web traffic increase, most of webmasters understand the most important traffic comes from search engines. There are many reasons why. For instance, this is target traffic, e.g. visitors are coming on a wanted resource unlike traffic trade systems, when you buy doubtful traffic with extremely low productivity. Proceedings from the mentioned above, webmasters are facing the problem of search engine optimization. The basic question for search engine optimization research is how do search engines work and how to achieve top positions is search engines SERPs (Search Engine Result Page). Leaving the details, I can say that top search engines, such as Google and Yahoo (we won't mention MSN search engine because it is currently using Yahoo search engine results and MSN's

new search engine beta version looks quite poor and funny too), are building SERPs according to any of queries basing on reference ranking of a document. For instance, we have a page with 5 inbound links. Search engine knows exactly how many links are pointing each and every page in the Internet. Engine's database also contains snapshots of all pages linking to our page. Such pages are getting keyword - analyzed, unless words are expressed with images. In case if the majority of keywords on that page are same to the majority of keywords on our page - such links becomes much more significant for it's relevancy. Of course, it is a rather simple model and in fact many factors are considered, but this factor of reference ranking forms the basis of all modern search engines. Further we can talk about the amount of references to this or that page and the relevance of these references. So, the promotion of any page above all is in the increase of thematic references to the given page. There are a lot of sites devoted to exchange links with thematic resources, which work on the principle "insert your URL and push submit", i.e. almost automatically, but such systems have low percentage of return and they are not always useful for your page. In case if a progressive search engine (such as Google or Yahoo) will spot your site participating in link farm programs - it is more likely that you will get banned for a long time. I have more faith in systems which need manual links addition - they are more effective and demand a lot of manual work, but the effectiveness of such work is much higher. How to start a productive and safe link swap? For instance, refer to Friends - you can choose section which your site is related to and add link to your page, thus you will get 1 relevant link to your page. Of course you'll need to put reciprocal link, but usually such mutual existence makes good results
